Find out about the vehicle safety by viewing and making notes on the videos below but more importantly learn why you need to know about carrying out these checks.

Q & A

Q Identify where you would check the engine oil level and tell me how you would check that the engine has sufficient oil.
A Identify the yellow dipstick and describe how to check oil level against the max / min markings. Ensure the vehicle is on level ground and wipe the dipstick before reinserting to check the level.

Q Identify where you would check the engine coolant level and tell me how you would check that the engine has the correct level.
A Identify the high/low markings on the coolant header tank. The pressure cap should not be removed when the engine is hot. Top up with the specified water / coolant mixture.

Q Identify where the windscreen washer reservoir is and tell me how you would check the windscreen washer level.
A Identify reservoir. Visual check is not possible; therefore you would top up the washer reservoir regularly and test screen washer operation.

A Identify the brake fluid reservoir and check the level against the max/min markings.

Q Show me how you would check the brake lights are working on this car.
A Operate the brake pedal, make use of reflections in windows, garage doors etc, or ask someone to help.

Q Tell me how you would check that the brakes are working before starting a journey.
A Apply the brakes as you move away slowly. They should not feel spongy and there should not be any excessive travel of the brake pedal before the brakes operate. The brakes should not pull to one side.

Q Tell me where you would find the recommended tyre pressures for this car and how the pressures should be checked.
A In the owner’s handbook. Use a reliable pressure gauge and check the tyres when they are cold. Don't forget the spare and always refit the valve caps.

Q Tell me how you would check the tyres to ensure that they have sufficient tread depth and that they are safe to use on the road.
A There should be at least 1.6mm of tread around the full circumference and across central 3/4 of the tyre width. The tyres should be free of cuts, lumps and bulges.

Q Show me or explain how you would check that the power assisted steering is working before starting a journey.
A Hold some pressure on the steering wheel as you start the engine; there should be a noticeable difference in the steering movement as the system begins to operate.

Q Tell me how you would check that the headlights and tail lights are working.
A Turn on ignition, switch on lights using light switch positioned on dashboard to right of steering wheel. Walk around vehicle to check lighting operation.

Q Show me how you would check the that direction indicators are working.
A Switch on hazard warning lights and walk around the vehicle to check their operation.

Q Show me how you would check that the horn is working.
A Press the centre of steering wheel boss to sound the horn.

Q Show me how you would check the parking brake for excessive wear. Make sure you keep safe control of the vehicle.
A Apply the footbrake firmly; demonstrate by applying the handbrake, when it is applied it fully secures itself and it is not at the end of the working travel.

Q Tell me how you would make sure your head restraint is correctly adjusted to provide best protection in the event of a crash.
A Head restraint should be adjusted so that the rigid part is at least as high as the eye or the top of the ears.

Q Show me how you would clean the windscreen using the windscreen washer and wipers.
A Press the end of right hand column stalk to wash and wipe the windscreen.

Q Show me how to set the demister controls to clear all windows, this should include both front and rear screens.
A Select air direction control buttons to 'up', increase fan speed, increase temperature setting and push the heated front and rear screen heater buttons. Alternatively, just press the 'MAX' button.

Q Show me how you would switch on the fog lights and explain when you would use them.
A Turn on the ignition and the headlights. Press the buttons positioned to the right and left of the headlamp switch for the front and rear fog lamps. Check warning lights are on. Explain that they should be used when visibility is at 100 metres or less.

Q Tell me how you would know if there was a problem with your anti-lock braking system (ABS).
A Switch on the ignition (don't start engine); the ABS warning light will come on for a few seconds and then go off again. (This is a self-diagnostic check). If this warning light stays on, or comes on whilst you are driving, this indicates a problem with the anti-lock braking system.

Q Show me how to switch the headlights from dipped beam to main beam and explain how you would know that the main beam is on whilst in the car.
A Turn headlights on. Pull the left/indicator lever up towards you until it stops and release it. Check the blue main beam warning light in the centre of the instrument cluster.
